The historical process of the establishment and development of the critical value and its related systems is reviewed，the characteristics of the critical value and the strategies of the establishment，assessment and improvement for the systems are systematically described，the current situation and existing problems of the critical value systems are deeply analyzed，and the targeted recommendations are proposed，finally prospects of the future trends of the critical value systems are proposed. It is expected that the standardization of clinical applications for the critical value systems should be promoted through multi-angles interpretation and analysis of the systems，and maximize the core objectives for protection of patient safety.
